About Us

The Korea Center for Investigative Journalism (KCIJ) is the first nonprofit investigative reporting organization in the Republic of Korea. We reveal wrongdoing of power and bring about changes in laws or policies for public interest. Our journalistic work is published on Newstapa, an online news outlet.

‘Newstapa’ is a combination of ‘news’ and ‘tapa(타파, 打破),’ which means ‘abolition’ in Korean. As the name implies, KCIJ-Newstapa strives against partisanship and commercialism in journalism.

Independent Journalism
for Public Interest

Funded mostly by over 30,000 donating members, we do not accept advertisements or sponsorship from business and government agency to remain perfectly independent from any type of power and interests. The center now consists of nearly 50 staff members including reporters, producers, data journalists, video journalists and membership managers.

Strengthening
Cross-border Investigations

We believe that corruption of the power, large businesses and criminal organizations in contemporary society is not limited to a single country, thus strive to strengthen international cooperation with many investigative reporting organizations overseas.

KCIJ is the only Korean member of the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and the only media partner of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). We have collaborated with global investigative reporting organizations such as the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, the Waseda Chronicle in Japan, and Tempo of Indonesia.
